My unit plan

I will be doing a unit on the dangers of alcohol and tobacco use among teenagers. Students will learn the short term and long term dangers of each. Students will be asked to create a pamplet that will tell other teens of the dangers and will try to convince them to say NO to alcohol and/or tobacco

EQ
What are risks associated with teens and alcohol/ tobacco use?

Unit Q

What immediate effects does alcohol use have on the body?
Why is the combination of alcohol use and teens a dangerous mix?
What immediate effects does nicotine have on the body?
How do the effects of alcohol and nicotine differ?

CQ

  1. I think this a great unit to do with middle school students, as this is an area they sometimes struggle with in their everyday life.

You have great questions, but I think that the essential question is more of a unit or content question. It might be too specific and not general enough.

  2. Having a 13 year old at home, I think this is an important unit. From what I am seeing, much of your unit questions are probably really content questions. The wording is very similar. I agree with Tom that your essential question would best fit as a unit question. You might also ask "Why is my health important?" Maybe an essential question might be "What's the risk?" or "Why risk it?" or "When does no really mean no?"
